What Makes the Emerald Coast Green?
If you ever search for the most beautiful beaches in the world, you will stumble upon the Florida Gulf Coast; specifically, the Florida panhandle stretching along a part of the Gulf of Mexico, often called the Emerald Coast. Considered to be a 27-mile stretch of white-sand beaches covering areas like Panama City, Destin, Fort Walton, Okaloosa Island and Pensacola, the Emerald Coast is one of the most beautiful areas in the state of Florida. But, why are the waters so perfectly Emerald? There are two main reasons;
1. Distance from the Mississippi River. The first and most important reason is: We are far enough from where the great Mississippi River meets the Gulf. The Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico about 250 miles from Destin. Being so far from the river’s delta has helped our water stay crystal clear.
2. Our Water’s Algae Levels. The color of the water here on the Emerald Coast is attributed to the Algae in the water. When the sun reflects off the Algae it makes our water the beautiful emerald color we all love.
There are a few attributes that contribute to its luminescent, unique green appearance. Let’s start with why we can see the color so well to begin with. It’s because the sand is among the whitest and cleanest in the world. This white sand is the catalyst to WHY we see the emerald green hue so well as the sun reflects off of the quartz sand bottom of the gulf.
Because the sun plays a big role in why the waters are emerald, the water may not be as green on rainy days. Also, the amount of algae fluctuates day by day, so some days it looks more emerald than others. Either way, the water along the Emerald Coast is pretty stunning.
